United Airlines has established specific procedures to ensure the safety and
well-being of young travelers flying alone.
When children under the age of 16 travel without a parent or legal guardian,
they are classified as Unaccompanied Minors. United Airlines provides an
unaccompanied minor service to ensure a smooth travel experience for these young
passengers. This service includes boarding assistance, introduction to the
flight attendant, and handing over the child to the designated person at their
destination.
For children between the ages of 5 and 15, the unaccompanied minor service is
mandatory when traveling without an adult. However, children aged 16 and above
are not required to use this service.
It's important to note that children under 5 years old are not permitted to
travel alone and must be accompanied by an adult.
United Airlines charges a fee of $150 each way for the unaccompanied minor
service. In the case of two or more children traveling together, a single fee is
assessed for each direction.
Children aged 5 to 15 who are traveling as unaccompanied minors are restricted
to nonstop or direct United flights. They are not permitted to travel on
connecting flights, but they can travel on the last nonstop flight of the day.
For teenagers aged 16 and above who are not using the unaccompanied minor
service, it is highly recommended to book flights early in the day to minimize
the risk of delays or missed connections. Unexpected schedule changes or
cancellations may result in travel plans extending into the following day, and
United Airlines may be unable to provide overnight accommodations for minors
under the age of 18.
If you plan to have your child travel as an unaccompanied minor, it is advised
to make the reservation through United Reservations or a travel agency. If the
reservation was made via united.com, please contact United Reservations at
1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) to ensure that all essential information, such
as the names of individuals bringing your child to the airport and picking them
up at the destination, is accurately entered into the system.
